These ecosystems are inspired by the original Wardian case, an innovative invention by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward from the 19th century. Ward’s idea of creating a large ecosystem on a ship was originally designed to protect plants during long sea voyages. Thanks to this invention, the plants could survive the journey due to the self-regulating system created onboard.
